With the warm weather back we are delving back into smoothie season! (And swimsuit season!)

Now, I love me some spinach and kale and berries, but sometimes I want something more dessert-like. And if I can also make it a full on meal replacement, even better. I know some people are not into drinking their breakfast, but i like the convenience. Especially if my toddler is game for a smoothie.

I had a hankering for pie the other day. We ordered two apple trees, but it will be two years before they get here because, well it takes a bit to grow a custom ordered specialty apple tree. I don’t remember the names of what we picked out. I do remember they are super ugly, but taste amazing. Like super ugly. It looks more like a potato tree than an apple tree. (Yes, I know potatoes don’t grow on trees!) Anyway, I am embracing the humble apple these days.

Apple Crisp Protein Smoothie

  • 1 tart apple
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 2 scoops unsweetened vanilla protein powder
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon oat bran (optional: it adds a bit to the apple crisp flavour.)

Core your apple and toss it, with skin on, in the blender with the other ingredients. Blend on high until smooth. If your blender is of decent quality, it shouldn’t matter what order your place the ingredients. Depending on your protein powder and apple type, this smoothie is 400-500 calories, so it is a meal replacement.

This one is just sweet enough to entice the kids. They say it tastes like apple pancakes.
