Getting Mama Back in the Groove

Madison Reed At home Hair Color

I’m no stranger to pregnancy and the postpartum frump slump. It happens.  Pregnancy acne and a body out of your control is enough to hit the self esteem. Add in the exhaustion, plus hormones, and it is no wonder some of us look like the walking dead.  I’ve spent the past week attempting to get my groove back in the physical sense.  An eyebrow wax, some new makeup, and a hair color treatment later, I’m on my way! Now if only that pesky baby weight would be on its way too.

For my postpartum get your groove back pampering week, I gave my dull, lank hair a boost with an at home color kit by Madison Reed.  Madison Reed hair color is free of ammonia, PPD, resorcinol, and added parabens. Since I’m drawn to products with  less toxic junk, this is right up my alley.

What makes Madison Reed different? Well, the kit itself is superior to any I can pick up at a nearby big box shop. I’ve used a lot of at home hair color kits, and Madison Reed comes with nifty extras. Instead one pair of gloves, there are two pair. I always hate trying to stash my dye covered gloves during the setting in time and then trying to pry the same damp gloves back on my hands without staining my hands. The second pair for rinsing is nice. There is also a cap included, which is nice to prevent drips and drying. An even better bonus is the color protecting shampoo and conditioner.  Most other kits just have conditioner,  but Madison Reed gives you shampoo too. The containers are small of course, but a little goes a long way, so they last a while.

Madison Reed’s website can guide you to find the right color for your hair and skin tone.   This is so important! I know all too well, the horrid results of a hair color that clashes with my skin tone.  Since my natural hair is a dark brown, almost black, and  my skin is cool toned,  I went with Palermo Black. It isn’t really black though. It is a deep, dark brown with some cool mahogany undertones. A very pretty color, especially in outdoor light.

Spa times commences when toddlers go in their room for quiet time. Hey, I’d love to tell you I sipped champagne while watching chick flicks alone at night for this activity, but let’s be real. Instead I get sparkling water and I contemplate if it would be too uncool to breastfeed while my hair follicles soak with Sid The Science Kid playing in the background. Glamour: we don’t have it here.

Madison Reed Hair Color

*before on the Left, After on right

I’m guessing my bleached out, sun damaged hair really needed a color because there was barely anything to rinse out. No inky black water in the tub this time!

All of the brassiness at the ends of my hair is gone, along with the couple grays that crop out here and there. The color is rich and subtle. Hair day for get your groove back week was a success!  No mess, no foul fumes, no drips, no stained hands or skin, and I didn’t even have to ruin any towels, since everything rinsed easily.

This is the easiest hair color experience I’ve ever had with hair this length. It is a good thing too since ornery babies don’t really care if mom is struggling with her hair. It is nice to feel like myself from the shoulders up. The frump slump is slowly being fought off. Now if only someone would tell me the postpartum weight loss secret and where all the pretty nursing bras went.
