Back To School: Reducing Waste with A Litter Free Lunch

Well, school is starting soon for our public district and has even already began for many others. It is hard for me to think about since it is currently 100 degrees outside and very few schools up here have any type of air conditioning. Many of you are likely more aware of the eco-friendly trend when it comes to school supplies and gear than I am, but one hot item I am trying to keep up with is reducing trash when it comes to food. I once did a hilarious and depressing project on a certain packaged lunch product with a plastic tray full of popular deli meats in a communications class in college. (In the nineties, they only had cheese and meat, but now they comes with all kinds of pizza and taco stuff? ) My project was basically a visual collage of how much waste certain prepackaged lunch items create in comparison to how much nutrition they provide. I will admit doing that project was a bit of a life changer for me. Being “green” was not a thing yet back then, but I was not big on making lots of trash since our apartment dumpster was several blocks away.

These days, kids are lucky to have so many cool, low waste lunch box items available to them! Soft-coolers, bentos, reusable spoons and straws…..it is gettin’ green out there! Lunch box kits like Litter Free Lunch, make it easy to push your child’s lunch options beyond the typical sandwich and chips, to a an unlimited wonderland! OK, that was over the top. Smorgasbord?

Litter Free Lunch is a line of environmentally friendly reusable food and drink products by New Wave Enviro. New Wave Enviro specializes in safe water bottles and lunch kits made of stainless steel or BPA-Free plastics that can be reused without risks. New Wave also carries a line of drinking, shower, and bath filters for removing chlorine and other chemicals from your water.
The Litter Free Lunch Kit is perfect for school or work lunches. Each kit includes an insulated soft cooler, four BPA-free food containers with tight lids and a 15 ounce BPA-free beverage bottle. Once you stack your containers in the cooler bag, there is still plenty of room for a cold-pak. The large container is the perfect size for an entree, the medium for a side dish, and the small dishes would be great for condiments.
My husband often needs to bring a lunch with him if he is out in the field or rivers for bee and otter surveys. The Litter Free Lunch Kit is a nice option for him. It also fits nicely in a pannier bag on a bicycle. I like it for packing stroller lunches for excursions to the lakes and parks. The only down side is I need two identical kits every day to avoid fighting between the kids.

I’m a big fan of buying groceries in large containers to save money, and then dishing it out by the serving. As convenient as all those small yogurt and fruit cups are, they are more expensive and create a lot of trash. A lot of places still do not recycle #5 plastic. I much prefer reusable containers to throwing away all of that plastic. The Litter Free Lunch containers have pretty tight lids and our yogurt and fruit has not leaked.
I have a few different lunch box bags now and like each one for different activities. However, the Litter Free Lunch Kit is definitely the best for school and work lunch.
New Wave Enviro currently has four color options of Litter Free Lunch kits,  plus an array of drink bottles and Seriously Safe Stainless™ Steel Food Containers.

  1. I like the Litter Free Lunch Kit because it is BPA free and allows you to pack a variety of foods for lunch.

  2. i hate using plastic bags for everything. i love how many containers this comes with 4 for food and a drink bottle. of course, bpa free is awesome too.

  3. This would be great for my husband to take to school. He just started his Master’s Degree in TCM and we’re trying to borrow as little money as possible so that means lots of brown bagging!

  4. I love the fact that it’s bpa free, so I don’t have to worry about leeching chemicals or anything. I also like how all the tupperware fits in the lunch box perfectly!

  5. I love how there are different containers so you can pack a bunch of things but keep them separate, but they will all fit in the bag together!
